Wayfinder Logistics Command

Overview

Wayfinder is a logistics command center for teams coordinating regional freight across carriers, warehouses, and customer delivery windows. The platform transforms live location data, route plans, capacity, weather, and service commitments into one operational picture. We redesigned the core experience to help dispatchers detect emerging risk earlier, coordinate a response, and communicate accurate updates without rebuilding the story across several tools.

The challenge

The original dashboard was optimized for tracking individual shipments, but operators were responsible for networks. A delayed vehicle could affect a dock schedule, a connecting route, and multiple customer promises, yet those relationships were difficult to see. Alerts arrived as isolated events with equal visual weight, encouraging reactive work. The product needed to reveal consequences, support rapid reprioritization, and remain usable on large wall displays as well as standard operations laptops.

Research and insight

We shadowed dispatchers during routine shifts and disruption events, documenting the information they gathered before making a call. Experienced operators constantly built a mental model of dependencies and available recovery options. The design opportunity was not simply to add more alerts. It was to externalize that model by connecting every exception to affected loads, time sensitivity, service impact, and realistic actions, while preserving an audit trail for teams joining later.

Product strategy

Wayfinder was reframed around network health, active exceptions, and recovery plans. The overview ranks issues by projected operational impact instead of event severity alone. An exception workspace brings evidence, dependencies, communication, and recommended actions together. Scenario comparison lets teams test rerouting, carrier reassignment, or schedule changes before committing. This structure creates a consistent path from awareness to analysis, decision, execution, and follow-up.

Experience architecture

The command view combines a map, route timeline, capacity picture, and prioritized exception rail without forcing users to interpret four separate dashboards. Filters reflect real operating territories, shifts, facilities, and customer commitments. Selecting an issue opens a workspace where related shipments, constraints, and stakeholders stay synchronized. A recovery plan can be assigned, approved, and tracked, while shift handoff captures unresolved risks and the reasoning behind previous decisions.

Interface system

The deep navy interface is designed for continuous use in mixed lighting and for quick recognition at distance. Green indicates stable flow, amber signals recoverable pressure, and red is reserved for confirmed service risk. Dense data tables use pinned context and progressive detail rather than horizontal sprawl. Map layers, charts, status patterns, and planning cards share the same visual grammar. Responsive rules preserve prioritization on laptops while large-display layouts emphasize network change and team awareness.

Outcome

Testing with operations teams showed that users could identify the highest-impact disruption and explain its downstream consequences more quickly than with the previous shipment-first dashboard. The recovery workspace reduced the need to move between mapping, messaging, and planning tools during a scenario. Beyond the prototype, the project delivered a product model and component system that Wayfinder can extend across capacity planning, customer communication, and predictive risk.
